Emergency Dentistry

Are you experiencing a dental emergency due to dental trauma or sharp pain? Dr. Mazhari can help by offering same day emergency dental appointments to help provide immediate treatment.

Do you know what to do in a dental emergency? Fast action is often required to save a tooth if it gets cracked, loosened or knocked out of your mouth completely. A tooth that comes out intact can possibly be reattached if you act quickly and get to the dentist in about half an hour. At our Alexandria emergency dental office, Dr. Mazhari and her team can make a same day urgent dental appointment for lost teeth or any other dental emergencies.

A tooth that’s been cracked or broken due to an injury can be restored with a dental crown. When a tooth comes out completely after an injury, your first priority is to take care of the injury itself. But in the case of a minor accident that knocks out a tooth and doesn’t require medical attention, acting fast could allow the tooth to be reattached. If it is in one piece, put it in a glass of milk and get to our office as soon as possible. If the tooth is loose but still in your mouth, try to hold it in place by gently biting down.

Breaking or losing a tooth due to injury is the most common type of dental emergency. Toothache is not necessarily an emergency unless it is sudden and caused by something lodged between the teeth. But ordinary toothache does require a dental visit if it does not go away in a day or two because it could be a sign of a serious problem.

Some people mistake lines in their teeth for cracks. It can be difficult to tell if a line is really a crack or not. Normal lines that appear in some people’s teeth are called craze lines. Technically they are fractures, but they only affect the enamel and are not dangerous. A line or crack that puts your tooth in danger goes down through the enamel to the dentin or second layer of the tooth, and can continue to get worse. Often a true crack is accompanied by pain. If you notice a crack or have pain when chewing, call for an appointment right away.
